Eco-Lighthouse recertification: what to do before your certificate expires

An Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn) certificate is valid for three years. Before it runs out, your business must go through its criteria again and have them approved by a certifier. This is how it works, in English, for teams where not everyone reads Norwegian.

What recertification means

According to the Eco-Lighthouse Foundation, every certified business must be recertified every third year, and recertification means reviewing the criteria your business is certified under. Your answers from last time are the starting point. The work is to check that each one is still true, update what has changed, and make sure there is something written down behind every «yes».

A certifier is assigned automatically once you have submitted the environmental survey (miljøkartlegging) in the portal.

When to start

The Foundation's English pages advise you to arrange a meeting with a certifier when about two and a half years have passed since certification. Our own advice is to start preparing four to six months before the expiry date. Most of the time goes into finding figures and writing down routines that only exist in someone's head, not into the meeting itself. Our deadline calculator (in Norwegian: enter the expiry date, «Når går sertifikatet ut?») works out the dates for you.

The steps

  1. Find your criteria in the portal. The common criteria (felleskriterier) and any industry criteria (bransjekriterier). Criteria change over time, so look at the list as it is now, not as it was three years ago.
  2. Go through each criterion. Is last time's answer still right? Mark each one as unchanged, changed or missing.
  3. Fill the gaps. Typical gaps are routines that exist in practice but not on paper: who collects the environmental data, how hazardous waste is handled, which environmental requirements you set for suppliers.
  4. Update the action plan. What happened to last period's measures, and what are the goals for the next three years?
  5. Submit the environmental survey. Then the certifier is assigned.
  6. Meet the certifier. Have the documentation ready: criteria with answers, environmental data, routines, receipts and the action plan.

Do you need a consultant?

Usually not. The Foundation's English pages say you need an Eco-Lighthouse consultant again if substantial changes put your business under different industry criteria. If the business is much the same as last time, you can do the recertification yourselves.

What it costs

According to the Foundation, there are no fixed costs for recertification other than the certifier. Certnor's fixed price for certification in 2026 runs from 9 520 kr (category 1, 1–9 full-time equivalents) to 16 200 kr (category 3), plus a 350 kr certificate control fee. Other certifiers have their own prices. The annual fee to the Foundation continues as before. Our cost calculator (in Norwegian) adds it up for your size and industry.

If the certificate expires

If the recertification is not approved before the expiry date, the status changes automatically to «ikke sertifisert» (not certified), and the certificate can no longer be used as documentation in public tenders. You then have six months to be recertified, including closing any nonconformities. If that does not happen, the certificate is withdrawn and the business is deactivated.

Every year: the climate and environmental report

Between recertifications, every certified business must report its climate and environmental figures for the previous year. The deadline is 1 April.

If you would rather not do the paperwork

Resertifisering.no is a Norwegian service. You paste your criteria from the portal into our order form and answer a few questions. Within one working day after payment you get each criterion reviewed, the answer texts, a routine for environmental data, an action plan and a folder for the certifier. An AI assistant writes the documents from what you send us. It does not make up figures: what it does not know becomes a question to you.

Three things to know first:

  • The documents are in Norwegian, and so is the order form. You are welcome to answer the questions in English.
  • We prepare the papers, not the certification. The certifier does the recertification, and you pay the certifier and the Foundation as usual. Our price is 3 900 kr, paid once.
  • If the service does not do what we promised, you get your money back.

You can pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or by invoice if you are a registered business in Norway.
